New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced Monday that he is discouraging all “non-essential” travel between the hours of 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. amid the coronavirus pandemic — as the number of cases in the state surged to 178.
Murphy tweeted that starting Monday night, all “non-essential and non-emergency travel” in the state is “strongly discouraged” between those hours.
“This will remain in effect for the foreseeable future,” Murphy said. “We want everyone to be home — and not out.”
During a later press conference Murphy insisted that “this is not a curfew.”
“But it is strongly recommended and travel is strongly discouraged,” Murphy said. “If you don’t need to be on the road, you should not be on the roads.”
“For those that don’t need to be out, please, please, please just stay home,” said Murphy, who added that an additional 80 residents in the state have tested positive for the virus — bringing the statewide total to 178.
The 80 new COVID-19 patients range in age from 5 years old to 93, officials said.
Murphy said he is mobilizing the New Jersey Army National Guard “to assist in our efforts any way necessary.”
The news came after Murphy, Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont announced that businesses across New York, New Jersey and Connecticut will be shuttered in order to stem the coronavirus outbreak.
Gyms, movie theaters, nightclubs, racetracks, casinos and performing art centers will be closed at 8 p.m. Monday and all bars and restaurants will be open only for takeout and delivery.
