<The Parish’s Integration Problem>

 

1. The reason this church exists.

 

1) This church was not created based on regional divisions. Instead, it was created to transcend these divisions.  There is a language barrier, as well as a cultural barrier that causes many hardships for first generation immigrants in their religious life. In other words, this church was created to help overcome this predicament. Namely, we experience a unique sense of community through religious life and friendship by maintaining our culture. That is why many parishioners drive at least 30 minutes or more on a weekly basis inorder to attend this church. (Toms River, Freehold, Holmdel, Matawan, etc.) However, if it is not a Korean-Catholic church, then our parishioners do not find it necessary to travel this distance. They would either attend an American parish nearby their homes or find another Korean-Catholic parish (in Metuchen or the Philadelphia area) to attend. There is no solid reason to continue coming to Immaculate Conception. Furthermore, many parishioners are likely to seek nearby Korean-Protestant churches as well. This is due to the fact that when many Korean-Catholics first arrived to America 20-30 years ago, they attended Korean-Protestant churches because they couldn’t find a Korean-Catholic church. There are three Korean-Protestant churches located within 30 minutes of Immaculate Conception. That is why we are in need of Korean priests. Our parish is in the middle of not only focusing on religious life, but also on finding one’s identity in this society as an immigrant by protecting our culture as a minority.

 

2) Immigration

People born as the 1.5 generation and 2nd generation have difficulty in speaking Korean and have a tendency to only speak English. However, these people are learning about the Korean culture and lifestyle, as well as the many problems that 1st generation Korean-Americans face, through strangers at this church. That is to say, a Korean-Catholic church not only teaches religion, but it also passes on a culture to the next generation. It is also a place where immigrants can sympathize with each other and help one another.

 

3) Currently, it has been reported that there are approximately 500,000 Koreans living in the New York and New Jersey areas. Also, there are about over 20 Korean-Catholic churches located in New York and New Jersey. Particularly in the case of New Jersey, in the Fort Lee and Edison areas, there are large Korean churches forming (There is a church currently taking shape where there are over 1,000 people attending weekly mass). And it is still growing. At the moment, the Korean society and its population are still mostly due to the influx of immigrants. Immigrants that have lived in America for a long time are rapidly migrating to the South Jersey area. That is why Edison and the nearby Metuchen Korean church are showing a rapid growth. Furthermore, in the case of the Diocese of Newark, there are a lot of 2nd generation priests being coming forth from there. Although at this point the influx of Korean-Catholics appear to be a few, there is hope for great potential when we look at the future.

 

2. The Problem That the Diocese Faces – The Reasons for Merging the Parishes

1). The Phenomenon of the Lack of Priests

The lack of priests is a serious problem that faces not only the Diocese of Trenton, but all of the churches in the worlds as well. Our parish is concerned about this matter too. Currently, this parish is continually bringing in priests from Korea, based on an agreement between the Trenton Diocese and Busan Diocese.  Due to this agreement, the lack of priests does not make an effective point for merging our parish. In the event a Korean priest cannot serve if our parish is merged, the parishioners will migrate to different churches, as it was previously stated above. Also, because Korea is a non-English speaking country (and because the structure of the Korean language is vastly different from English) it is hard for a Korean priest to serve for English-speaking parishioners if he hasn’t studied abroad for many years in an English-speaking country.

It is for these reasons that the lack of priests does not affect this parish.

 

2. Financial Affairs

When this parish was first started, a lot of support was received from the Diocese of Trenton. We were in debt to the Diocese and we were unable to repay the debt for a long time. However, our debt was forgiven thanks to the help and support of Bishop Smith last year. Furthermore, our parish was in a position where we received assistance from the Diocese of Trenton every year. However, starting from 3-4 years ago, the financial situation of this parish has improved immensely and is in a state where it has plenty of potential. From three years before, we were preparing to payoff the debt and expenses to the Diocese of Trenton. While searching for the means to do this, we were forgiven of our debt last fall (November 2007). This fiscal year (2008-2009), we plan to pay the early contributions to the Diocese. That is to say, this parish is now able to sustain itself without great financial assistance from the Diocese. So, we feel that decreasing costs for the Diocese of Trenton does not apply to our parish either.

 

We would like to inform you that the majority of our parish does not wish to be merged, especially for these two reasons.

Honestly, when we first heard that parishes might be merged, we never thought that our parish would be included as a candidate. This is because we believe that the lack of priests and financial issues did not apply to our church. For this reason, we only sent one or two representatives to the meetings. It is our mistake that we did have more meetings regarding this matter sooner.
